The General Work Permit is one of the most common permits issued in South Africa. In order to successfully obtain a general work permit for South Africa, it is essential for you to have the following paperwork in order:

SAQA Certificate of Evaluation
A full police clearance
Proof of job advertisement
Your contract of employment
Proof of good health
Registration with the appropriate professional body
Personal information and documentation
A duly completed application form as per the submitting embassy, consulate or Department of Home Affairs office

Remember, you are not allowed to work in South Africa before you receive your General work permit. If you have maintained temporary residency for a 5 year period of time; meaning that you were employed in South Africa for 5 years; you are eligible to apply for permanent residency.
