Luckily, as a pensioner it is easy to apply for temporary or permanent residency in South Africa based on a Retirement Permit.
South African Retirement Visas can be issued to any foreign national irrespective of age, as long as they are able to demonstrate the long term availability of sufficient financial resources to support them throughout their stay in South Africa.
Retirement Permits Visas & Permits South Africa Requirements:
A monthly income of no less than R37,000 per person is required in order to apply for a Retirement Visa to South Africa. The income can be pension based, from annuities, investments or a retirement account, although it must be from abroad.
Each individual applicant must meet the criteria indicated above for the full duration of their stay in South Africa. Income and net assets of life partners or spouses are considered individually and not as a unit.
Therefore, both partners must qualify separately. In some cases, Retirement Visa holders can seek employment, provided they have the correct authorisation from the Department of Home Affairs (DHA).
Retirement Visas are only valid for 4 years. Applications for renewals can be done after this period, provided the applicant still meets the above requirements.
