Many foreigners come to South Africa to engage in meaningful work in one of South Africa’s charities or non-profit organisations. Although volunteer work does not require a Work Permit you will be required to apply for a Volunteer Permit to enable you to stay legally in South Africa for an extended period of time.

There are many charity organisations in South Africa, offering volunteer positions to foreigners. Volunteers in South Africa need to be in possession of a valid Volunteer Permit.

Volunteer Permits Visas/ Permits South Africa requirements:

In order to apply for a Volunteer Permit for South Africa, the applicant needs to provide evidence of sufficient funds to support their stay as well as a return ticket. Should the voluntary work exceed three months, the applicant additionally needs to pass a medical test and provide a police clearance certificate. A Volunteer Permit can be issued for up to 3 years.

The application for a Volunteer Permit must be submitted at the South African embassy in your country. The visa should be issued before travelling to South Africa.

Please note, you cannot obtain Permanent Residency status on a Volunteer Permit.
