As a foreign national in a country, you never want to be in a situation where your visa expires before you get a chance to renew it. You have to ensure that you understand the visa renewal process in South Africa, as it can take months to renew your visa

At least you don’t have to do it all on your own. Here are 4 important things you need to know about South African visa renewals:

  • Start the process early

It’s always better to start your visa renewal as soon as possible. The Department of Home Affairs stipulate that South African visa renewals should be submitted at least 60 days before the expiry of your current visa

  • You must be able to meet all the requirements… again

To qualify for an extension of a visa, you must be able to meet all the requirements. If you be unable to meet any requirements, your visa renewal might be rejected

  • Your visa needs to be renewed in South Africa

Unfortunately, you won’t be able to renew your South African visa while you’re hot air ballooning over the Namibian Desert. Home Affairs stipulate that renewals must be submitted at a VFS application centre in South Africa

  • Your passport needs to be up to date

Don’t forget about your passport. It is crucial to make sure your passport is valid at all times, because you won’t be able to apply for a renewal otherwise
